Alternative Hybrid Locomotive Technologies, Inc. (AHL-TECH) is developing a revolutionary new generation of locomotives that combine next generation alternative fuel engines with state-of-the-art generators, hybrid electric battery technology, and efficient power recovery features. All are controlled by AHL-TECH’s patent pending Predictive Power Management Control (PPMC) computer software.
AHL-TECH’s proprietary ethanol-optimized internal combustion engines will dramatically reduce particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx), without requiring complicated aftertreatment systems. Using ethanol, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be reduced by 50% to 90%. At the same time, power and torque performance is similar to or better than contemporary diesel-electric locomotives.
AHL-TECH is developing a revolutionary and proprietary new hybrid battery system utilizing inexpensive, high capacity lead-acid battery sets, coupled with a high-efficiency Electro-Mechanical Battery (EMB) system. The hybrid battery system supports regenerative braking, leading to reduced emissions and better fuel economy. AHL-TECH’s patent-pending “Power Module” design also supports the use of clean power technologies such as fuel cells, without requiring changes to the locomotive drive systems or design.

Halcrow’s Traction and Rolling Stock team, as part of Halcrow Group Ltd’s Rail Business, provides experience in all stages of railway vehicle development, from concept through design, procurement, manufacture, testing and commissioning, operation, warranty, reliability, maintenance and overhaul. Furthermore, while undertaking the above we also take into consideration how our actions will impact not only on the railway environment but on the environment as a whole.
As well as the interfaces with the railway infrastructure, our expertise covers a broad spectrum of rail vehicle systems and specialist fields, from the design and introduction of new lighting systems to the commissioning of electric and diesel traction packages. This has been applied to multiple units, coaches, locomotives, freight vehicles, light rail, metros and on-track machines.
With specific reference to this conference Halcrow Group Limited has considered the following approached to better energy management within the railway environment.
- Energy storage technologies such as: lithium-ion batteries, ultra capacitors, flywheels
- Energy saving technologies such as: coasting
- Benefits (for example: saving dynamic braking energy, saving traction energy, reducing total installed power, reducing noise in stations, etc)
- Suitability of different technologies for various railway duty cycles (for example: light rail vehicles, commuter trains, high speed trains)
- Existing applications and development from around the world
